standing in the doorway, bug-eyed and slack-jawed, and jogged outside to meet the other guys.

By the time Duke caught up with Hinky, Bullet was way ahead of him, walking

beside Cube with a proud strut as if he were about to step onto a stage. Though Duke had an uneasy feeling in his gut about the way Bullet was aggressively going after him, he wasn’t worried, because he knew Bullet would be discreet and Bullet wouldn’t take any chances that could hurt his own career. For once, in its own perverse way, DADT was

actually working to Duke’s advantage.

“You ready for some speed?” Hinky asked, lifting his arm up high.

Duke smiled and slapped his palm against Hinky’s. “The faster the better,” he

said.

But the exercise didn’t go as well as Duke had hoped it would. When they were in

the air flying at top speed, they discovered Commander Johnson was the simulated

enemy for this maneuver. Duke and Hinky did everything they could to follow the rules and fly by the textbook. Duke wanted to win this exercise so much his teeth hurt. But Commander Johnson was too good to outsmart. He trailed them when they least expected

it. He popped up out of nowhere and hunted them down without showing any mercy. By

the time he had them where he wanted them, he killed them off the same way he would

have killed the enemy off in a real combat situation. And this time Duke knew it was his fault. A minute before Duke and Hinky were hit, Commander Johnson had killed off

Bullet and Cube, and that was all Duke had been worrying about. And when he should

have been watching his wing for the enemy instead of worrying about Bullet’s plane,
